Values Quotes – Henry Van Dyke on Charm

Today’s quote is from Henry Van Dyke, an American author, educator and clergyman, who might be best known for writing the lyrics to the popular hymn “Joyful, Joyful, We Adore Thee”, sung to the tune of Beethoven’s “Ode to Joy”.

A great quote from Van Dyke is:

“There is no personal charm so great as the charm of a cheerful temperament.”

What a cheerful way to highlight the value of charm.

As a differentiating value, Charm means ability to persuade, delight or arouse admiration.

Now, I know some very charming people. And yes, they seem to be able to easily persuade others. They are naturally delightful and admired. Maybe even to the point where others envy them…

Yet, can’t all of us be charming if we want to be?

Van Dyke nicely highlights the secret: to have a cheerful temperament. When you’re happy, it shows, and others are drawn to you.

Here’s a test. Try smiling to a few strangers today and see what happens. Or say “hello” and politely greet people you’ve never met before. But don’t be surprised if you get a favorable response. Whether you know it or not, you’re showing your charm.

Today’s value was selected from the “Effectiveness-Influence” category, based on the e-book Developing Your Differentiating Values.
