Values Quotes – Vince Lombardi on Work

Today’s quote is from Vince Lombardi, considered one of the best football coaches in NFL history.

A brilliant quote from Lombardi is:

“The only place success comes before work is in the dictionary.”

Anyone who has studied Lombardi knows that he knew the value of work.

As a differentiating value, Work means exerting mental or physical effort for a purpose; or having an effect or outcome.

There’s a reason so many people talk about ‘work’ as a nasty 4-letter word. It feels hard, and even painful. And I suppose for them it is.

But it doesn’t have to be.

Here’s the secret to embracing this value: know your purpose or outcome. When you are clear on the outcome you desire, then you know that work is simply a natural part of the process to get there.

In addition, most people who enjoy their work not only focus on the outcome, they enjoy the process too. They literally see the incremental benefits that they are personally acquiring through their work. Whether it’s increased mental or physical strength or stamina, the benefits of work increases over time.

In other words, work doesn’t have to be dull or drudgery. Work can be quite fulfilling and even fun. And in the end, you will also experience success when you fulfill your purpose or achieve your desired outcome.

Today’s value was selected from the “Enthusiasm-Teamwork” category, based on the e-book Developing Your Differentiating Values.
